Assignment 8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z_xFXqye-w

The theme of this movies the battle between cloned poke'mon and the originals. The theme is exemplified in this scene by the use of the cloned and origional poke'mon fighting eachother. The theme is didactive because the audience is generally younger unless you're me.

Line- The use of line is prevalent because it is all drawing attention to the characters. For example Ash the boy with the hat. Is found staring at fight scene. The lines around him are directing towards his face.

Shape- each character has their own shape. The turtles are round, which is contrasted by the other pokemon which may be oval, and some maybe square. This gives contrast in the scene just by the different characters.

Space- the space in this scene is large. The reason that it is is that it shows that there is much space to fight in this scene and to allow all the characters to fit in the scene.

Rhythm- the rythm of the scene is fast. It cuts at rapid pace to show the chaos of the scene. That all the pokemon are fighting their clone and that the matches are equal and neither can win.

The movement is erratic in the scene. They are moving fast which creates affinity in the whole scene. Allowing their to be similarities in the entire scene.

Animation deconstruction
This first screen shot is from the television series Hellsing.
The colors are mostly dark in the background surrounding Alucard. His shirt is a dark saturated red color to show he is a blood sucker. Creating a parallel with the fact he is a vampire. There is a lack of brightness in this scene except for his eyes which are burning very bright. The Hues are along the same warm color scheme.

The lighting in this scene is very dark. The background and his face are completely hidden in the shadows. This symbolizes the fact that his true identity and name are unknown. His named spelled backwards is Dracula so many believe that he truly is the original night walker. The movements are still as he is pulling the dagger out of his chest. The weight in the scene is created when his bow around his neck moves when he pulls the knife out of his chest.

Screenshot 2:
This shot is of Sirius Victoria portrays many things. First the colors and hues are all very bright contrasting the shots of Alucard. Victoria is also a vampire, but she is new and has softer motives. The colors are bright. Her hues are complimentary. There is very little saturation in her shot which is opposite of Alucard who is monochromatic. There are no shadows in this screenshot which is opposite of Alucard as well. The symbolism here is that Victoria is a very innocent character and has very little blood on her hands. Her innocence is still intact even though she is now a vampire. The mood therefore is bright and promising opposite than Alucard as well.

Song deconstruction

I did the song I kissed a girl origionally by Katy Perry, covered by Attack Attack!

Attack Attack!'s version Listening Framework

Katy Perry's Listening Framework

The lyrics of this song are identical. They are both talking about kissing a girl and really liking it, even though they are in a relationship with a man. To me, that's a little scary seeing that the one band is made of all men. Anyway, they're saying women are attractive to both sexes. Men are attracted to them naturally, yet even straight women can become attracted to a woman.

The melodies are also the same. The melodies are based mostly off of a arpeggio. Which are thirds between notes and then the octave above.  For example a C chord is C E and G. With an arpeggio it is C E G and C.  The notes are played individually in that order usually. The notes aren't directly the same as an arpeggio, but they are close. The only difference in melody is in the Attack Attack! version, they scream the bridge making it the breakdown of the song.

The music quality of both songs are similar. They have the same structure. They have mostly the same melody. The rhythm of Attack Attack!'s version is faster and more upbeat as Katy Perry's is a medium speed with a light shuffle. The intensity of Attack Attack!'s version was more prominent than Katy Perry's. The speed was faster in Attack Attack!'s. The Timbre was different as well. Katy Perry's version was more pop as Attack Attack!'s was punk. I believe the pitch is higher in Attack Attack!'s version.

I believe both are good, but I prefer Attack Attack!'s version better because it is more upbeat and light hearted sounding. Both are good, and that is only my personal opinion.

Reflections on sound design

The scene above does a great job effecting the mood and feeling of it just by using audio. First it creates a representational space by just sound. If listened into head phones you can feel the direction of which the sound was coming from. When the bottle clinks, the man is sanding in the opposite direction of which the noise is coming from. The sound gave you directionality. When the man is walking you can here his foot steps. This gives the scene a sense of movement.

The scene also does a good job with different modes. The scene has referential sounds as in the man falling to the ground really isn't that loud. It also has semantic sounds. The pop can and the glass bottle aren't really there, but they are perceived as such in the scene.

Brainwashed

The lizard brain is the part of the brain that is our critic to everything we create and do that lies outside of the boundaries of “normal” or what everyone else does. It tries to keep you from failing, but in the process makes you a very harsh critic to everything else your do. Making art becomes very hard to do in this situation because anything that is art or creative is out of the normal. Art doesn’t have boundaries so the lizard brain has no clue how to process it. It automatically rejects the art and tells you it is not sufficient.

These two parts of the process are really important to me. I am going into a creative based job field, and it makes it really hard for me to accept what I am doing with my life when my “lizard brain” tells me I am not doing something correctly. I have an extremely critical voice, and it is helpful to know that everyone deals with this problem. I have learned it is okay for me to fail.

I fail all the time. Many people refer to fails as funny.  I don’t every time I screw up my critical voice gets worse, but this manifesto makes so much sense to me. I understand that we as humans will always fail. It is about being able to collect ourselves and retry again, and go through the same process again. This process shows me how to find my true self and who I am to become.

This process is repeatable in my opinion. This blog is a perfect representation. I have multiple posts, and every post builds on itself making it a more complex piece. Each time I go through the same process. I connect with people, I am generous with my thoughts, I create art through words, I acknowledge that I may be critical about what I am saying, I ship the blog by posting it, and sometimes I will fail. Then at the end of the day, I learn from my failures and try another post.

This process most of us are doing already. I look now and see that I am. I do realize though that I am too critical in my work and who I am. I do consider myself to be an eccentric person, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a place in society.  Even though the normal may think this, or try to make me feel that I must change myself to fit in. I have learned in college and through various experiences that it is just better to be myself than try to pretend I am someone I’m not. I feel as if others like me would embrace their individuality instead of pretending to be who they’re not, our society would be a much better place.

I have also learned I can’t be safe. I can’t play scared and go into an industry that doesn’t matter to me because that is also not being true to myself. I have seen it so much sense I’ve been in college. People really like doing one thing and go into a different occupation that they don’t really care about. Or they won’t go to college altogether. I have truly learned who I am this year and that its okay to be different. I no longer worry about the people who are brainwashed into thinking its not okay to be who your are.

FInding Your Howl

Finding your howl spoke to me more than I thought it would. I, of course, read this for a class. While reading this, I was submerged in the story. It speaks about how we all must sacrifice to find our true selves. We must leave behind who we are. This wolf was kept in captivity and once let into the wild, forgot how to howl. It talks about his journey and how he completely forgets him old self as well as being completely terrified of the thing he is becoming. He "dug" himself deeper into the forest to eventually emerge the leader he knew he could be. We all have that drive inside, yet most of us are too scared to leave back the life we have to move forward in the direction in which shows great potential. In a nutshell I believe this is what the story is trying to say.

My Quote

"Captivity was like a dream and freedom was the real experience." I feel that here as a child everything is a dream. Everything is perfect in every way. You have your parents, your friends, your family, and every want you could ever have. You had your legos, your games, your sports, etc. Once we our in the real world everything changes. You are on your own. The person you think that you were isn't. You have to dig into yourself and pull out the person you really are. Its a transformation I am beginning to go through right now. I no longer have the assumption that my parents, classmates and teachers had for me. I know now I have the potential to be whoever I want to be. I just have to dig into myself and find it. It is unsettling and when it gets rough; it is actually terrifying. I can see who I am supposed to be, but yet I cannot be that person. I have to continue traveling down this path, fighting every inch to get to the person I am supposed to be.  I can't turn back, because I know that is not the path I'm supposed to take. Yet every step forward is scary and depressing. I am taking a path that no one else can follow me down, it is a terrifying experience. Its like an Alice in Wonderland feeling. I am continually falling down this hole, and the circumstances only allow me to go down the path and no one else. I can't turn around even if I wanted to. I may miss home, my family, and everything important to me, but I can't concern myself with that. I can only concentrate where I am and attempt to find where I am going. We never realize how much our past means to much; how we want to hold on to the people and the things we love. Not until they are gone and you can only take the experiences you have had with them with you. It is almost like a dream when you can't have the ones you love with you on a crazy journey. They are almost like inanimate thoughts. It is my responsibility to keep them alive while I am on this journey. The freedom I have received has came with great responsibilities, but I can't turn around now even if I wanted. Freedom is not free... We have responsibilities with this new found freedom. I have no fallback. If I screw up it falls on my shoulders and no one else.
It is so ironic. We as children dream of being big and doing everything on our own, yet once we receive responsibility we only yearn to be children again with no responsibility. Yet, I don't wish this... I have found that as much as a roller coaster it has been with this crazy freedom, I don't want to be a child again. I hated who I was because I couldn't control how I was perceived. I was only labeled by my status and social life. Now people ask me who I am and want to know. I still don't have a straight answer for them yet, but what I do know is that I am assertive, motivated, persistent, and determined to find my true self. I think that this is a better start than I had last year. I am digging inch by inch to find who I am. I will let you know when I come out on the other side of this hole.

Deconstructing Characters

SUPERHERO
Despite being a protagonist, this character is mostly dark. He wears a dark mask to hide his features and has a intimidating silhouette with a dark cape as well. The lighting on his face shows that he is still good, but had tragic events in his past.

COLOR: Dark with gray accents for contrast
Color: The color of this character is dark like night. The colors can vary, but all lie within the gray scale. His scheme is considered a monochromatic color scheme because his colors are various colors of black, gray, and white. He is a character that is viewed as a villain by the public because of the misinterpreted color scheme of his suit. He is a misunderstood character by many, but has kind hearted intentions to help keep his city free from evil. This character is the representation that dark does not have to be evil. The reason his colors are so mysterious is that he must conceal his identity. Those who know he is merciful value what he does for the city, yet still feel intimated by the aura he portrays. He has a deep internal conflict that is interpreted in his color. He feels responsible for the wrong-doings done to others and has a burden to make up for those wrong doings. Explaining his guilt of death in his color as well. He never quite recovered from the loss of his loved ones at an early age. Leaving him alone and depressed. His colors convey a shadowed figure with a dark past, but he stands for good.

LIGHT: On his face separates him from being a villain

Light: The lighting of this character is mostly dark (imagine that), but his face is lit. My interpretation of why is that though his head is filled with dark and depressing thoughts, but he speaks and does the work of good. His face and features are hidden to give him the look a anonymous man. He may hide behind his mask to save himself from the true villains of the city from knowing his true identity, but he is truly a man who wants to be noticed for something good. I also believe the lighting of his face allows the viewer to see the true intentions of this hero in his expression.

http://www.nightmoth.co.uk/images/st/st_8-BatNight1.jpgShape: So this hint should obviously be a dead giveaway of who I am talking about here. The bat shape gives this character its meaning. When Bruce Wayne was a child, he fell down the well at his house which lead to a underground cavern where bats loved to hang out. Since the boy was about seven or eight, he began to have an irrational fear of bats. Few months later, his father and mother took Bruce to see an opera. In the opera were bat characters running around on stage. Since Bruce's parents knew of his fear of bats, they left the theater early. Where there in the backstreet of the theater, Bruce's parents were mugged and killed. Directly effected by his fear of bats, Bruce never forgave himself for not staying in the theater. He personally wanted to fight crime to avenge his parents death. Since his family came from the largest business company in Gotham, he also felt responsible for keeping Gotham safe. When he became a superhero he decided to embrace his fear of bats to use as a calling card.

VILLAIN
So there are many villains that Batman has fought but his biggest challenge is the one I am about to describe.

Color: The color of this antagonist's face represents the irony of the story. Seeing that Batman is a very dark figure, the villain takes the role of the light colored character. His colors are erratic. He wears red, purple, and green which are split complimentary colors. The colors do not make a pretty color scheme, but they are there for a purpose. First, the colors show how insane the villains mind is. He destroys for the sake of chaos and no other reason. The colors also give off a psychedelic feeling. I believe that represents the trip that the viewer goes on while trying to figure out the villains motive.

Lighting: Like this mans face, the villain has a lit face and a shadowed body in almost every scene. This shows that he tries to portray a positive and happy look to others,  but deep inside he is truly evil. His face is lit but his head is tilted down to create more of a shadow almost if to hide true thoughts and feelings from others. He hides all motives and it is very uncertain what his true directive is (other than causing mass chaos for the fun of it.) His history is unknown and is a very confusing character to deconstruct.

Shape: So there is no real object that this character represents, but it does represent a type of person. A clown. Again by this one it should be apparent who I am talking about. The joker is crazy. He finds joy in the irony of himself. He never can stop smiling because of the makeup and scars even when he is committing the most heinous of acts. He loves being able to laugh at destruction and chaos. Which is obviously opposite of what clowns try to do. Clowns try to spread laughter and play by their humor. The destruction that the joker causes does not spread joy, but fear to all of Gotham. The joker is the anti-clown in my opinion.

Again, notice the lighting of the face, and the shadow of the body. Notice the neurotic look on his face and the crazy colors he is wearing.
